Call of Duty Elite – Will You Pay? Beta this summer on Black Ops
There’s been a lot of chatter this past few days about the official announcement of the social media portal for Call of Duty named Call of Duty Elite. According to statements in Activision’s press release, “Call of Duty Elite offers cutting-edge features that significantly enhance the franchises’ multiplayer experience and deliver a new level of social engagement that will unite more than 30 million players worldwide.” Call of Duty Elite will debut on November 8th with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. Features mentioned include allowing you to connect with friends, gamers of a similar skill level, competitive clans, player generated content, enhanced stats, and more. It will also include a suite of tools that will help improve your game and compete in tournaments. Many of the basic features will be available for free but Call of Duty Elite will also feature a premium membership that would include “a wide range of state-of-the-art services, exclusive entertainment programming and all-inclusive game content for less than the cost of any comparable online entertainment service currently in the market”.
What that cost will be is not mentioned but it is rumored to be a monthly subscription based service for under $10 a month (in the $5-8 range). That’s a good price for an MMO, I’m not sure how it will hold up for a competitive multiplayer game and there are still a number of questions about the service itself. Activision will be holding a public beta of Elite and Call of Duty Black Ops this summer, you can find more information on the beta and Elite on www.callofduty.com.
